An Epidemiologic Study on Urolithiasis

Abstract
An epidemiologic and clinical study was done on 225 patients who inhabited in the Chonnam area and underwent an operation for the removal of urolithiasis at the Department of Urology, Chonnam University Medical School during the 5 years period from January 1976 to December 1980.
The following results were obtained.
1. The ages of the patients ranged from 1 to 79 years, showing the highest incidence in 40 to 49 years(27.6 % ).
There were 157 men and 68 women, a ratio of 2.3:1.
2. The geographical distribution of urolithiasis showed 93 cases(41.3%) in Kwangju, 15 cases (6.7%) in Mokpo and 8 cases (3.6%) in Kwangsan, and there were 135 cases(60 %) in inland and 90 cases(40 %) in coastland.
3. The occupational distribution of urolithiasis showed 55 cases(24.4%) in house wife, 43 cases(19. 1%) in agriculture, 41 cases(17. 8%) in office holder, 29 cases(12.9%) in commerce and 28 cases(12.4%) in office worker.
There were no significant differences in the relationship between occupational and geographical distributions.
4. The analysis of 93 urinary calculi showed calcium oxalate in 47 cases (50.5%), mixed type of calcium oxalate and calcium phosphate in 23 cases (24.7%) and mixed type of calcium phosphate and ammonium phosphate in 12 cases( 12.9% ).
There were no significant differences in the relationship between composition of urinary caslculi and occupational or geographical distribution.
